South metro notebook: Softball parity runs deep in South Suburban

The South Suburban Conference softball race brings with it plenty of parity. It's not solely based on the depth of good programs in the 10-team league.

The past three years, it has been evident at the top of the league standings. Six schools have finished first or second in that short span.

Eagan claimed the top spot in the conference standings this season, followed by Prior Lake. Defending Class 3A state champion Eastview finished third.

Rosemount won the conference crown a year ago, with Eastview finishing as the runner-up.

In 2014, Lakeville North claimed the top spot with Bloomington Jefferson finishing second. Bloomington Jefferson has since departed for the Metro West Conference.

The Apple Valley boys' soccer program will remain in the hands of the Scanlon family.

Chris Scanlon will succeed his father, Chuck Scanlon, at the helm of the South Suburban Conference school. Chuck retired earlier this spring after 38 years as the school's mentor.

"We are looking forward to having Chris lead the Eagles' program," Apple Valley activities director Pete Buesgens said. "He knows the game, knows our student-athletes, and is committed to an education-based philosophy in the coaching world. Chris knows he has big shoes to fill, and we are confident that he is the right person to lead our program in a positive direction."

Chuck Scanlon is the winningest soccer coach (586-122-57) in state history. He guided the Eagles to nine state championships.
