South metro notebook: Lakeville South grad promoted to soccer coach

Olivia Bagnall has been promoted to coach the team she starred for in high school.

The Lakeville South graduate was recently named the coach of the Cougars' girls' soccer squad. She served as an assistant coach this past season.

"I want us to be really competitive, win the [South Suburban] conference and get back to the state tournament," Bagnall said.

The 2009 graduate went on to play for the Gophers, and professionally in Sweden. She was a captain for the Gophers her junior and senior seasons.

"I've had a few different coaches and was able to see how they work," Bagnall said. "I'll take pieces from all of them and implement them into my style as a coach. They will all play a role in what I do."

The Cougars have made five appearances in the Class 2A state tournament, the last in 2010. They were the state champions in 2007, during the midst of four consecutive state tournament trips.

"The state tournament is a great experience," said Bagnall, who appeared in the state tournament for the Cougars in all four of her high school seasons. "Once you make the state tournament, it helps motivate you to get back there the following season. You take on a very competitive mindset."

• Henry Sibley sophomore Sophie Redding won the vaulting championship with a mark of 9.625 in the Class 2A, Section 3 gymnastics meet. She finished sixth in the event in the state meet a year ago.

• Lakeville North junior Max McGlade doubled his goal output in the Panthers' boys' hockey regular season finale, a 7-6 victory over Prior Lake in a South Suburban Conference matchup. He had two goals in the second period, and finished with a hat trick.
