Apple Valley's wrestling team is off to its usual dominating start.

The Eagles accumulated 703.5 points to win the Council Bluffs (Iowa) Wrestling Classic championship last weekend. Runner-up Fort Dodge (544 points), the No. 1- ranked team in Iowa, was a distant second.

Apple Valley had four individual champions in captains Kyle Rathman (132 pounds), Brock Morgan (145) and Mark Hall (170), and sophomore Gable Steveson (220).

Nate Larson (113) finished second while Devin Roberts (138) took third place.

Every Eagles wrestler had at least three victories. They finished with 76 individual match victories, 48 by fall.

The Class 3A 10-time defending state champion Eagles are ranked second in the state behind St. Michael-Albertville by the Guillotine.

Top performances

• Apple Valley junior guard Gary Trent Jr. accomplished a rare feat when two Class 4A teams met in basketball: He outscored the opposition. Trent scored 46 points, tying his school record for points in a game, in 23 minutes as the Eagles defeated Prior Lake 92-38 in a South Suburban Conference matchup. He went 19-for-27 from the field. It was his third 40-point game of the season. Eagles senior center Brock Bertram became the school's all-time leading rebounder in an 89-81 loss to Hopkins in the Breakdown Classic. He has 903 rebounds, breaking the mark of 891 set by Tom Schalk in 2011.

• It's all about timing for Nick Mahmood. The Henry Sibley senior forward scored his second goal of the game with 1 second left, giving the Warriors a 3-2 victory over Shakopee in nonconference boys' hockey action. Mahmood also assisted on Henry Sibley's other goal. They were his first points of the season.
