Deputies with the Scott County Sheriff's Office will begin carrying the anti-overdose drug Narcan.

The drug is used to reverse the effects of an overdose, typically for people using prescription pain medications, heroin or other opioids.

All patrol deputies, who recently received training through North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, will be equipped with Narcan. The antidote is also available at the Scott County Courthouse and county jail.

A grant from the Metropolitan Emergency Service Board dispersed funding for Narcan at agencies throughout the state.

Other law enforcement agencies, including the Minneapolis Fire Department and the Hennepin and Washington County Sheriff's offices, recently started carrying Narcan, which is also known by its generic name, naloxone.
