July 12, 2009 at 11:25AM

Tropical Depression Soudelor will bring heavy rain to extreme southern Chinaand northern Vietnam on Sunday. Soudelor was briefly a tropical storm as itmoved across the South China Sea. Even as a tropical depression with winds of35 mph, it will produce widespread heavy rain. Amounts could top 5 inchesacross Hainan Dao, China's southernmost island. Amounts may be even higher overthe mountainous terrain of northern Vietnam.Soudelor brought very heavy rain to the Philippines as it passed through onThursday. Rainfall at Laoag on Luzon topped 13 inches. While winds are notexpected to be a problem as Soudelor moves across southern China and Vietnam, heavy rainfall could easily trigger flooding. This area has seen above-normalrainfall for the past few months. So already saturated hillsides could easilyproduce mudslides.
