December 29, 2009 at 1:25PM

Heavy snow will fall in areas of the United Kingdom and Ireland today andWednesday as a major Atlantic storm meets arctic cold. The storm's rain, some of which could be heavy enough for flooding, will spreadover the southern half of England, southern Wales and southern Ireland intotoday. Inland, air will be cold enough for at least brief snowfall, even insouthern England. Snow will spare greater London, but a slow change to rainwill allow substantial accumulation in areas from the Welsh hills to thenorthern and western Midland.

Interior Ireland will also get localized heavy snowfall, mostly over hills.

As the storm spreads farther north late today into Wednesday, snow will alsobreak out in northern England with heavy snow falling in areas along and eastof the Pennine Hills. Flight delays and cancellations will also take place.

The impact of the storm will slow ground travel in affected areas. Roadscrossing hills could be blocked by wind-drifted snowfall to a foot or more.

Flight delays and cancellations will also take place.
