The Japanese film "13 Assassins" was given a 4-star rating by Colin Covert of the Star Tribune.
Critics working for the Star Tribune have screened 70 movies in advance of Thursday's opening of the Mpls. St. Paul International Filmfest (MSPIFF). On a four-star rating system, they have been quite stingy in handing out four stars, with just six movies getting that score. But drop down to 3½ stars, and there are 17 movies making the very-high grade.
Here are the four-star winners:
"Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times"
"Incredibly Small"
"13 Assassins"
"Windfall"
"Film Socialisme"
"The Interrupters"
And these movies all scored the next-highest rating, 3½ stars:
- "Hesher"
- "Tyrrannosaur"
- "Young Goethe in Love"
- "The Fourth Portrait"
- "The Sleeping Beautfy"
- "Curling"
- "Cracks"
- "Nostalgia for the Light"
- "Bill Cunningham New York"
- "Louder than a Bomb"
- "Truck Farm"
- "No Return"
- "Au Revoir Taipei"
- "The Arbor"
- "Project Nim"
- "The Imperialists Are Still Alive!"
- "Stake Land"
Look for the reviews of these and other MSPIFF movies here, and in the print edition on April 15, 22 and 29. The festival runs through May 5. Listings include showtimes, descriptions, movie trailers and photos.
