Pilot dies in plane crash near Cambridge Municipal Airport in Isanti County

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating after the Beech K35 crashed.

A pilot died after a small plane crashed Thursday in a field near the Cambridge Municipal Airport in Isanti County.

At about 11:25 a.m. Thursday, a resident reported a possible plane crash near the airport. At the scene, first responders found the pilot and and declared him dead.

The identity of the pilot will be released by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, said Cambridge City Administrator Evan Vogel.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating after the Beech K35 crashed under unknown circumstances, spokesperson Sarah Taylor Sulick said.

An NTSB investigator is expected to arrive in Cambridge on Friday morning to begin documenting the scene and examining the plane. The aircraft will then be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation.

As part of the investigation, the NTSB will analyze flight track data, recordings of air traffic control communications, aircraft maintenance records, weather conditions, the pilot’s background, witness statements and surveillance video. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.
