The pilot of a small airplane was injured when he crashed late Sunday morning south of Hugo.

The plane crashed just off Hwy. 61 in White Bear Township near County Road J, which is near Benson Municipal Airport. The pilot's name is Gary McDaniel, KSTP-TV reported.

Rescue crews removed him from the wreckage and took him to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, according to emergency dispatch audio. A Regions spokesperson said McDaniel was in fair condition late Sunday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the plane as a Piper PA-22, a single-engine propeller aircraft. The plane is registered to a 78-year-old pilot from Centerville, which is about 6 miles northwest of the airport.

The FAA said its investigators were en route to the crash site, and the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified.
