At least six people have died in Minnesota waterways over the past few days.

About 6:25 p.m. Sunday, the Chisago County Sheriff's Office reported that it recovered the body of Nicholas Paul Johns, 26, who apparently drowned after jumping off a cliff over the St. Croix River near Rock Island. His city of residence was not released.

About 5:30 Sunday morning, fishermen found a woman's body floating near the boat landing at Crystal Lake in Burnsville, said Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows. Authorities were called and recovered the body of Jocelyn Renee Brengman, 24, of Bloomington.

An autopsy was being conducted on Monday. Burnsville police and the Dakota County Sheriff's Office are investigating the circumstances of the death but said foul play is not suspected.

It's been an especially deadly summer for drownings in the metro area, Bellows said. "I can't recall the last time I saw this many drownings," he said.

Also Sunday, the search continued for a man who apparently drowned on Lake Minnetonka Saturday night.

The man, a Twin Cities resident in his 40s, was last seen in Wayzata Bay, where he was boating with friends. He swam about 25 feet to help someone with a disabled personal watercraft, but as he swam back to the boat, he began to struggle and slid out of sight, said Lisa Kiava, Hennepin County Sheriff's spokeswoman.

Local fire departments and the Sheriff's Office water patrol responded to the call a little before 8 p.m. Saturday, and a State Patrol helicopter and water patrol sonar side scanner were used in the search.

The search went on overnight and into Sunday morning, Kiava said.

The last drowning at Lake Minnetonka was more than two years ago.

Meanwhile, the Hennepin County medical examiner's office had not released the identity of a Maryland man in his 30s who apparently drowned Saturday night in a swimming pond at Elm Creek Regional Park in Maple Grove.

In another fatality on Minnesota waters, the body of a 26-year-old man from St. Louis Park was recovered Sunday from Lower Whitefish Lake, near Brainerd. He jumped off a pontoon boat late Saturday but did not resurface.

The unidentified man's body was recovered in about 90 feet of water at midmorning Sunday and taken to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office.

At about 5 p.m. Friday, a 16-year-old Duluth boy died after hitting his head on a boat and slipping underwater on Island Lake in St. Louis County, according to the Duluth News Tribune. The Sheriff's Office said Clayton Olaf Deraas was swinging from a rope when he hit his head on a nearby boat.

Numerous people tried to help him but he went underwater and wasn't immediately found. Rescue workers recovered his body about three hours later.
