Sioux Falls dad charged after daughter, 19 days old, dies; drugs found in home

19-day-old Kayleigh was not breathing when emergency personnel arrived. She died the next day.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with child neglect and a drug offense in the wake of his x-month-old daughter's death in their Sioux Falls home, authorities said.

Michael D. Schumm was charged by warrant Friday in Minnehaha County with two felonies: abuse and neglect of a minor and possession of at least 2 ounces of marijuana.

Schumm's daughter, Kayleigh, was not breathing in the apartment when officers arrived Wednesday, police said. Officers and paramedics performing resuscitation efforts.

Kayleigh was taken by ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls and died the next day, according to police.

Schumm's mother, LaVonne Jacob, told the Sioux Falls Argus leader that was 19 days old and a "beautiful, precious angel."

Jacob Schumm, Michael's father, wrote in a Facebook posting defended his son, "My son would never hurt her or any child. … He did some things wrong, yes, but not to Kayleigh!"
