Simley tops St. Thomas Academy

Simley 25, St. Thomas Academy 16

Recap: Ignoring a historical disadvantage against St. Thomas Academy, Simley not only won 25-16 but the Spartans controlled much of the game. Before Saturday, St. Thomas Academy won 14 of the past 15 meetings. No matter. Junior quarterback Michael Busch ran the triple-option offense almost without flaw. He ran for two scores, threw 78 yards for a third score and helped ensure the Spartans never turned the ball over. No. 3 seed Simley (7-3) plays at 7 p.m. on Friday at No. 1 seed St. Paul Central.

Key of the game: Leading 18-10 early in the fourth quarter, Simley received a lift when Cody Albright intercepted a St. Thomas Academy pass at the Cadets 20-yard line. Busch later scored for a 25-10 lead.

Quote: "Coach [Rex] King has been telling us all year this is the team and this is the year to take it all. We have a great group of guys, and I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else, man." Albright.

One thing to know: St. Thomas Academy scored with no time remaining on a 51-yard touchdown pass.

Resilience, more production from the bench, and ‘Playoff Ant’ showing up will be key to the Wolves coming home tied 1-1.
