Simley runner kicks toward state

October 28, 2011 at 10:28PM

Wellens, a senior, has his sights set on qualifying for the Class 2A boys' cross-country state meet after coming up short in his bid as a junior.

Three words my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Active; hard working; disciplined.

How did you get started in the sports you now compete in? My older brother was a good competitor, and I wanted to be just like him so I started running.

How do you balance school and athletics? Just finish my homework after my sports in the evening.

What did you work on in the offseason? Running up to 70 miles a week.

What is your favorite meal before a meet? Ham and turkey sandwiches.

To get focused for competition, I ... think about the race positively, and relax.

I know I have an edge on another runner when ... we're close at the end. I have a great kick at the end of races.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete so far? Winning the (Classic Suburban) conference.

In 10 years, I hope I'm ... working as an engineer or a pharmacist.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? Never look back. Be the best that you can be.
