Simley guard excels with daddy as inspiration

Simley's girls' basketball team has used a balanced offensive attack to win 12 of its first 13 games.

Senior guard Shauna Horsch finds herself right in the middle of that pack, averaging 11 points per game. She also averages 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Horsch was also a member of the girls' swimming team in the fall. Here is a closer look at her:

The best movie I've seen in the last year? "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Three words or phrases my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Leader; team player; positive.

How do you balance school and basketball during the year? Time management. I do my school work when I know I have a chance instead of putting it off for later.

How did you get started playing the sports you play now in high school? Basketball: My dad built me a basketball court in our yard when I was younger. My brother and I would spend countless hours out there, and I fell in love with the game. Swimming: One of my friends convinced me to come to practice with her and I was a natural.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete so far? When our basketball team came back from a 10-point deficit against Rogers in the last four minutes and won by two [52-50 on Jan. 6].

What were your goals for the 2011-2012 school year? I wanted to be an all-conference [Classic Suburban] swimmer, and I accomplished that. I would also love to further our basketball team into the playoffs and make a run at the state tournament.

What is your favorite pregame meal? Pizza rolls.

Who is your school's biggest rival, and why? For our basketball team, not necessarily our school, the biggest rival would be Hill-Murray. They seem to have such a reputation, and we always play up to their standards and give them a run for their money.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? The Jamestown Jimmies [Jamestown College, N.D.] because being a member of that team is my next challenge.

When you have time off during vacation, what do you like to do? Travel to where there is sun.

In 10 years, I hope I'm ... happy and have chosen all the right paths for myself.

Do you have a secret talent -- and if so, what is it? I can catch fish better than the boys in my family.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? "Play your game. You don't have to prove anything to anyone but yourself." - My daddy
