Showers to Grace the East on Sunday

September 11, 2010 at 7:25PM

The weekend will end on a wet note from New York State to Florida on Sunday. While showers are typically not welcome on a September weekend day,drought-stricken parts of the East are in need of the rain.

The arrival of a cold front will spread the showers to the East Coast bySunday. Enough steamy air will be in place that thunderstorms will also rumblefrom the eastern Carolinas to Florida.

New England, including Boston, will be the exception to Sunday's wet weather.

An area of high pressure will instead make for a dry and cool end to theweekend. The showers will wait until Sunday night and Monday to arrive.

The main impact of the showers over the rest of the East on Sunday will be toput a damper on outdoor plans. Widespread flash flooding and severe weather arenot expected.

However, an isolated gusty thunderstorm across the eastern Carolinas cannot beruled. Residents and visitors of the Southeast are also reminded of thelightning danger that accompanies each thunderstorm.

Despite potential disruptions to outdoor plans, Sunday's showers will actuallyprove to be beneficial by delivering needed rainfall.

The United States Drought Monitor reported on Thursday that abnormally dryconditions are being experienced in a portion of every state across the EasternSeaboard. Drought conditions are most widespread in the mid-Atlantic.

The drought in West Virginia's panhandle has reached extreme levels.

Martinsburg, W. Va., has only received 51 percent of its normal rainfall sinceJune. For the same period of time, that percentage stands at 43 in Richmond,Va.

Unfortunately, Sunday's showers will only put a slight dent in these rainfalldeficits. While any rainfall is welcome, the Eastern Seaboard really needsseveral soaking (but not flooding) rain events to totally end this ongoingdrought.
