Ever wonder where birds go to spend the winter? Short-eared Owls, regular migrants and sometimes breeders in Minnesota, do migrate, but with no one destination in mind. Fourteen of these birds were equiped with radio transmittors this fall. The idea was to track their migration flights. So far, the owls have been traced to central Canada, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Texas, and Mexico. The bird in Mexico was caught this past summer in Nome, Alaska. It's migration journey was almost 4,000 miles. The Short-eared Owl below was photographed in southern Minnesota in February 2006.
