A new show opening this weekend (Feb. 17-18) at Franklin Art Works features two Brooklyn-based artists known for their graphic novels and cartooning. The main gallery will feature large new paintings by Shawn Cheng that portray mythic creatures and epic battles. A detail of one of his paintings is seen above. Cheng has published many graphic novels through Hougton Mifflin, Conundrum Press, Fluke, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Microcosm Publishing, and Candlewick Press.

Also on view will be prints and drawings by Matt Wiegle, inspired by the Cormac McCarthy novel "Blood Meridian." Wiegle's comics and illustrations appear in publications from Tugboat Press, Fluke, The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Seven Stories Press.

Wiegle and Cheng, who are part of a graphic-art and cartooning website called Partyka, will be present at the opening reception, 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the gallery: 1021 E. Franklin Av. in Minneapolis. Regular gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Tues.-Sat.
