Share your talent: Be a sidewalk poet

March 17, 2012 at 10:27PM

St. Paul's fifth annual sidewalk poetry contest is open for entries until April 13.

Five poets will win $150 each and see their work published on city sidewalks.

All city residents are eligible. To submit a poem, or to learn more about the contest, visit www.stpaul.gov/poetry.

A panel of local poets and writers will pick the winners, who will be announced May 15 at the University Club on Summit Avenue.

Including this year's winners, the city will have printed 42 poems at more than 500 places.

The city has been home to great writers including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis and August Wilson, Mayor Chris Coleman said.

"The sidewalk poetry program advances this rich literary tradition, while incorporating something fun and unexpected into our everyday lives," he said.

The project, called, "Everyday Poems for City Sidewalk," is funded through state Legacy Fund money distributed by the state Arts Board and the Legislature.
