Shakopee's longtime school superintendent will retire this summer.

Jon McBroom, 61, said Friday that he plans to leave the school district at the end of June.

"The job is pretty complex and hectic," he said. "I, frankly, just am ready to step back and relax a little bit."

His plans: Spend more time with grandkids, take a few months off, then look for a part-time project with a slower pace -- not necessarily in the field of education.

McBroom has led Shakopee schools for 11 years, a period of dramatic growth for the district, which now has 7,000 students. He previously served as schools chief in Mora and Rush City, Minn.

The school board will meet in the next week or so to start the process of hiring a new superintendent, according to Board Chairman Steve Schneider.
