Severe weather threatens

Severe storms bloomed across central Minnesota and in the Twin Cities metro area Saturday evening as a sticky day turning into a dark-skied evening of potentially dangerous weather. But the Minnesota Twins were expected to play as scheduled at 6:10 p.m., shortly after severe storms swept through the metro area.

Tornadoes were reported to have touched down around 5 p.m. in western Wright County in a storm that was headed toward Chaska, Carver and Shakopee, and a tornado warning was in effect in western Hennepin County for a short time. There were reports of severe winds and large hail in the western metro, and sirens went off in many west metro communities.

Thousands of people attending a drum and bugle corps event at the TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis were asked to leave the stands for the concourse at about 2:30 p.m. for about 25 minutes, one attendee said. At 4:30, they were again told to leave the stands.

Tornado watches and warnings were in effect in about half of Minnesota's counties late Saturday afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms were expected to continue Saturday night, mainly between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.
