Services for Jim Northrup, an award-winning Ojibwe storyteller, poet, playwright and author, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Sawyer Tribal Community Center.

Northrup died of complications of kidney cancer Monday at his home on the Fond du Lac Reservation. He was 73. A traditional fire was lit outside his home shortly after his death and will continue to burn through Friday.

He was lifelong scholar of Ojibwe heritage and had published four books, three plays, six films and six anthologies. He began writing later in life, and his stories featured sometimes-ribald humor.

Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Community Center, 3243 Moorhead Road, in Sawyer, Minn.
