TWINS UPDATE

After batting .228 on the road last year (compared with .302 at home), Denard Span got off to a strong start in the three-game series at Toronto, going 5-for-11 with two walks and a home run that gave the Twins a critical insurance run Sunday. Span found himself hitting in too many defensive counts last year and was determined to be more aggressive at times this year. His home run, against former Twins reliever Jon Rauch, came on a first-pitch fastball. "I told Delmon [Young], I get tired of taking pitches for you guys." ... This will be the Twins' only visit to Yankee Stadium this year. They are 6-30 in the Bronx under manager Ron Gardenhire, counting the postseason.

YANKEES UPDATE

The Yankees had a relatively quiet offseason after going 95-67, winning the wild card, sweeping the Twins in the Division Series and losing to the Rangers in the AL Championship Series. Newcomers include Freddy Garcia (a familiar foe for the Twins), setup man Rafael Soriano, Bartolo Colon (now a reliever), catcher Russell Martin and reserve infielder Eric Chavez, the former Oakland third baseman. ... Nova has made only one appearance against the Twins, a scoreless inning of relief May 16. He was impressive in spring training, posting a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings. Mark Teixeira homered in all three games as the Yankees took two of three from the Tigers to start the season.
