Second man sentenced in St. Paul ambush death

The second of two men convicted of an ambush killing on St. Paul's East Side was sentenced Wednesday in Ramsey County District Court to 36 1/2 years in prison.

Nicholas T. Jackson, 28, of St. Paul, was found guilty by a jury in February of second-degree murder in the Nov. 9, 2010, shooting death of Joseph Sanchez, 28, of Lake Elmo.

The second gunman, Nathan N. Durick, 28, of Minneapolis, pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder and was sentenced last year to 38 years in prison.

Jackson and Sanchez had children with the same woman and had a long-running feud stemming from their relationships with her.

Authorities say Durick and Jackson had test-fired a gun on the day of the murder to make sure that it was working. They also arranged for someone to notify them of Sanchez's whereabouts.

Durick admitted firing nine shots at Sanchez while Sanchez ran in an alley near Payne and Jessamine Avenues. Durick said Jackson fired, too.

Sanchez, a father of seven children, was pronounced dead at the scene.
