Scrolling through history: A look at the scrolls

March 7, 2010 at 3:54AM

• In 1947, a shepherd stumbled upon the Dead Sea Scrolls in caves below the ancient settlement of Qumran, Israel. • The 11 caves are about 13 miles east of Jerusalem.

• The scrolls are written mostly on parchment, some on papyrus, in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

• Archaeologists have collected more than 100,000 scroll fragments into 931 documents.

• Pieces of every book of the Old Testament have been found, except the Book of Esther.

• In 1954, four scroll fragments were offered for sale in the Wall Street Journal.

• The scrolls were made accessible to the public in 1965.

• This is the scrolls' 13th U.S. visit and 21st trip out of Israel.
