Welcome to the fourth installment of commenter Newbie's new feature, whereby he examines the soft underbelly of the soft underbelly of sports. Newbie? ------------------------
What Happened Last Weekend:
Golf - Bubba Watson won the weekend. I consider him a superstar of golf, even though he has only two wins and no majors. He will be fun to watch, though, if Tiger and Phil struggle.
Obviously then, Tiger Woods did not win this weekend. After starting with a couple of 69's, he shot a 74 on Saturday, only his second round over par (72) in 46 rounds at Torrey Pines. The final round was worse with a 75 and a new rookie, trying to make a name for himself, felt Woods is quitting on himself. And if that wasn't bad enough for Tiger, development on some of his ventures has been halted.
Tennis - Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in straight sets. I didn't get a chance to watch this but these are two names I have heard for a while that should be destined for greatness. Perhaps that is starting to happen. If you have some insight into tennis, please share it.
What to watch this weekend: Roman Numerals Edition
Madden Bowl XVII - Live Stream ESPN3 Thursday 8pm CST.
This will be the first time the event is shown live. To get a sense of the drama, here is last year's Championship won by the suddenly fragile Maurice Jones-Drew. More information on this year's event is here. But highlights include: Some football players controlling themselves on a video game and musical guest Biz Markie. Incidentally, if you do a google search of "Markie" the result is a shocking juxtaposition of Biz Markie and Markie Post. That's just something you can't un-see, and I miss Night Court.
Lingerie Bowl VIII - Pay-per-view
I don't have a lot to say about this event, except it will not be on in my house. Chances are pretty good that the Puppy Bowl VII will be, however. I did check out some of the semi-finals of the LFL on MTV2 last Saturday, because Newbile was working. However, I was quickly overruled by the two year old who wanted to watch Shrek ... again. I convinced him to compromise and watch Monsters Inc. Trust me, it was a compromise. Anyway, if you are interested in the game, some dudes have some breakdowns here. Perhaps we'll make more of an effort next year.

Untrue, Unresearched, and Possibly Incendiary Slurs Against Various Niche Sports: Soccer Transfer Deadline Edition
Marth requested this feature, and after this he may take it away. I'm not gonna lie, I don't know what this transfer deadline thing is. Wikipedia tried to explain it to me, but there were a lot of words and I am too tired to read. So, I am going to assume it is basically when a soccer player decides he wants to play for a different team, and so he does. I'm not sure if that is better or worse than how we do things in America, but since I am an American, I will have to assume it is worse. A guy just decides he wants to play for another team? Even if the team he is currently playing for will give him more money? I just don't see something like that happening here. It would set a dangerous precedent that a few great players could get together and decide they all want to go play for the same team. I don't think there is a league in America that would allow individual players to have that much control. I know what you are thinking, "Newbie, something like that already happened!" You are partially right; however, even though Eli Manning made it clear he didn't want to play for the Chargers, the Chargers still drafted him and were still able to work out a trade and at least got something out of it. Instead of the guy just walking away and crippling a franchise. If you can think of a better example, I'd like to hear it. [Editor's note: We're pretty sure Newbie wants us to talk about LeBron].
Anyway, here is a link to an article about the transfer thingy by some soccer talking guy. For those that are interested in soccer stuff.
Honestly though, if you have some legitimate thoughts on the topic, please share. I'd be interested to learn.
Any other thoughts on the above topics; including the inevitably terrible halftime show this weekend that is going to ruin the Puppy Bowl for me. Kittens? Really? Stupid.
