A school bus that could not stop on a steep icy hill slid onto a busy street and sparked a multivehicle crash Wednesday morning in north Minneapolis, police said.
The bus carrying 29 students was on its way to Jenny Lind School at about 9:30 a.m. when it attempted to stop on glare ice at a stop sign at 6th Street and Dowling Avenue N. The bus slid into the intersection where it collided with a car heading west on Dowling. That vehicle then struck an eastbound vehicle, Minneapolis Police spokesman Scott Seroka said.
None of the students on the bus or the driver was injured. A second bus took the kids to school, a Minneapolis School District spokeswoman said.
Drivers of the other cars involved in the crash also were unhurt, Seroka said.
Two other vehicles descending down the hill behind the bus on 6th Street veered into a snowbank to avoid hitting the bus, he said.
The street "was tough to walk down," let alone drive on, Seroka said.
Police parked squads at the top of the hill to prevent other motorists from using 6th Street. City crews were dispatched to apply salt and sand.
