WESTONKA

Community ed director recognizedMary Hughes, Westonka School District's community education director, has received a "Community Educator of the Year" award from the Minnesota Community Education Association.

In her nomination letter, the staff said Hughes' style as a mentor and leader brings out the best in others and creates an environment of collaboration, innovation, and inspiration.

She has been with the department since 2001 and in education for more than 27 years. She will receive the award at a Nov. 4 ceremony.

RICHFIELD

Holy Angels hosts prospective studentsThe Academy of Holy Angels will host prospective students at two open houses next month.

A co-curricular fair showcasing the Richfield high school's activities and sports will take place from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 4. From 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. each day, the school will host tours and presentations and share financial aid and scholarship information.

CARVER COUNTY

District's school buses go 'green'The Eastern Carver County School District is one of the first in Minnesota with liquid-propane-powered buses.

The district is using 18 new propane buses this fall, each of which is expected to save $1,000 to $1,500 on fuel costs annually. The district's primary bus contractor, Positive Connections, owns the buses.

The buses also include a GPS unit to monitor the location of buses and help fine-tune routes as well as a computerized fueling station to monitor cost savings.

HOPKINS

Student newspaper gets national honorThe Hopkins High School student newspaper, the Royal Page, has been recognized as one of the nation's top student newspapers.

The 2009-10 staff of the Royal Page earned All-American status, the highest rating given annually by the National Scholastic Press Association. The staff was recognized for its coverage and content, photos, arts and graphics, layout and design, and promoting school leadership.

Benilde-St. Margaret's presents its fall playBenilde-St. Margaret's High School will present "You Can't Take It With You" at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 31.
