School board expects $4 million shortfallDistrict 622's School Board this month approved a budget with a revenue shortfall of $4 million for the 2011-12 school year. Now the district must find ways to cut spending by that amount.

The district actually was facing a $7 million budget shortfall next year, but the board decided to use $3 million from its fund balance to cover some of the shortfall.

The fund balance is money the district keeps in a reserve account, which it uses to cover payroll when state aid payments are delayed. This allows the district to avoid borrowing money.
