School briefs: South Washington superintendent to hold three community sessions

South Washington Superintendent Mark Porter will hold three community engagement sessions in the coming weeks to update residents on recent happenings in the school district, including the strategic plan and student achievement results. He also will present the district's new budgeting process.

The meetings will include an interactive session where those attending can respond to a series of questions and sign up for focus groups.

The sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Woodbury High School, on Oct. 18 at Park High School and on Oct. 25 at East Ridge High School.

Stillwater

Junior high teacher receives national grantSara Damon, a geography teacher at Stillwater Junior High School, has been selected to participate in the Teachers for Global Classrooms program. The grant is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department.

Damon is one of three teachers from Minnesota and one of 68 teachers from the nation selected for the professional development program.

The program begins with an eight-week online course that will introduce theories surrounding globalized learning and provide opportunities to develop practical skills in lesson planning, international project collaboration and community engagement. Upon completion of the course, she'll attend a two-day workshop in Washington, D.C., and travel to Brazil, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco or Ukraine.

Scholarships available for extracurricularsYouth Advantage, a local nonprofit organization, is offering Stillwater children financial assistance so they can participate in the arts, athletics and educational-enrichment programs.

Youth Advantage provides scholarships and necessary equipment to eligible youths in kindergarten through 12th grade who qualify based on the financial needs of their family.

Forest Lake

High school speech, debate teams honoredForest Lake Area High School's speech and debate team was inducted recently into the National Forensics League 100 Club.

The honor is presented to speech and debate programs that earn 100 degrees or more in a year, a feat Forest Lake's program accomplished last year.

This is the second year that Forest Lake's speech and debate team has been honored by the National Forensics League.
