School briefs: Old Wildwood Elementary in Mahtomedi to be torn down

September 28, 2013 at 9:13PM

The old Wildwood Elementary School building in Mahtomedi will be razed in early October to make way for single-family homes.

In August, the school board approved the building's sale for $500,000 to Landmark Development of Minnesota. In its place, a developer is planning to build 15 single-family homes, with construction slated to begin early next year.

At about 87,000 square feet, the $18 million new Wildwood Elementary building, located about two miles away in Grant, is about 40 percent larger than the old school, which was built in 1951.

Youth group to host gender equity event

Students from the Mahtomedi and North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale school districts will team up on Oct. 11 for a female empowerment event called "Day of the Girl."

Participants will learn about gender equality issues and how to "create a safe space for girls and young women," organizers say.

The event, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be held at Woodland Hills, 1740 Van Dyke St. in Maplewood, and is open to both male and female students.

According to organizers, "Day of the Girl" is a "take-home project" of a student member of the Youth Leadership Council, a group that includes representatives from the two school districts. That student had served as a U.S. delegate last April to a girls empowerment seminar in Brazil.

The Youth Leadership Council gives local high school students the chance to speak out on community issues and provide input on student programs.

The Oct. 11 event is free, but registration is required at the council's website by Oct. 3.

School board hopefuls to appear at forum

A forum featuring the crowded field of South Washington County school board candidates will be held Oct. 22 in the council chambers at St. Paul Park City Hall, 600 Portland Av.

Seventeen candidates have filed for the five available seats — a majority of the seven-member board.

Four people will be elected to four-year terms and the fifth will serve the final two years of the term begun by former Board Chairwoman Leslee Boyd. Fourteen people are vying for the four-year seats, and three are competing for the two-year seat.

The event is being hosted by the League of Women Voters and will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

According to a school district news release, audience members can submit questions at the forum, but most of the questions will be generated by the league and given to candidates ahead of time. The forum will be aired live by the South Washington County Telecommunications Commission and replayed later.
