School briefs: Minnetonka's St. David's Center holds parenting seminar

St. David's Center for Child & Family Development will hold a seminar about parent-child attachment strategies on Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m.

The seminar, "Being the Parent Your Child Needs and the Person You Want to Be," is free and will be held at the Center for Family Development, 3395 Plymouth Road.

Minnetonka High School Theatre is presenting Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida," which runs now through May 11 on the Arts Center on 7's Main Stage.

It is the modern retelling of Verdi's timeless opera about the forbidden love between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier.

Limited tickets are still on sale for all performances, and group rates are available. Performances will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, and May 10 and 11.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors 65 and older, and $12 for youth under 18.

Bloomington high schools have announced their spring play schedules:

• Jefferson High School will present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" today through Saturday, May 1-4, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m. in the school auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the door starting one hour before the performance, or reserved at www.brownpapertickets.com. They are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.

• Kennedy High School will present "The Hobbit" Thursday through Saturday, May 2-4, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the door one hour before the performance or by calling 952-681-5231. A preview performance for senior citizens (over age 65) will take place Wednesday, May 1, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $3 and must be purchased ahead of the performance by calling 952-681-5231.

The Bloomington Center for the Arts will host its annual Bloomington Elementary Schools Art Show this month in the Atrium Gallery.

The exhibition features art created by students from all 10 Bloomington elementary schools.

The Atrium Gallery is located on the second floor of the Bloomington Center for the Arts, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The Adaptive Recreation and Learning Exchange program, serving adults with developmental disabilities, will perform an original play, "AR&LE's Got Talent: A TV Reality Check," at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in the Olson Middle School Auditorium, 4551 W. 102nd St.

The one-hour comedy features 38 adults with developmental disabilities and is made possible by the creative team of Emily Anderson, Janet Clarke and Leslie Fideler. The show is funded in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Bloomington's Jefferson and Kennedy high schools will celebrate their annual Peace & Diversity Day on Friday, May 3, with a Peace Run and other events.

The day will begin with a Peace Site rededication at 9:45 a.m. at Jefferson's Peace Pole and Peace Garden. The Peace Run will then depart from Jefferson at 10 a.m., looping through Bloomington and finishing at Kennedy.

Students from both schools will hear a presentation that day from Jane Elliot, a former teacher and activist who created the "blue-eyed, brown-eyed" exercise first done with grade-school students in the 1960s.

During the week, Kennedy will also hold a fundraiser for families in Vietnam, and student groups will teach Kennedy culinary classes how to cook various cultural meals and distribute samples in the cafeteria.

Jefferson and Kennedy students also will view interactive diversity booths presented by students, clubs and community groups.

This annual community event, the Treasure Hunt, showcases new and gently used clothing, furniture, toys, household items, electronics, books and other items.

Early bird entry will be at 8 a.m. for $3, and free admission will be from 9 a.m. until closing at 4 p.m. A half-price sale will be held from 1-4 p.m., and a bag sale — a bag full of items for $5 — will run from 3-4 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will go to the educational programs at Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Mosaic, Eden Prairie Schools' new full-day gifted-and-talented program, is accepting a second round of student applications.

The program will open at the start of the 2013-14 school year at Forest Hills and Prairie View elementary schools for students in grades 4 and 5. Over the next two years, the program will expand to include students in grades 2-6.

Second-round applications are being accepted through Friday, May 3. The district will review applications and determine the need for further individual student assessment on May 14-15. Parents will be notified May 24-28.

This summer Eden Prairie will have 48 Chinese students and four adults visiting from its sister school in Loudi, China.

Eden Prairie families are needed to be host families for them during their summer visit.

The Edina High School synchronized swimming team will host a show to preview the team's 2013 routines for upcoming local and state competitions. The team finished third last year at the state meet.
