TENNIS

Davenport withdraws before semifinal Lindsay Davenport withdrew from the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Saturday because of fever and aches before her semifinal against Maria Sharapova. This is the first time in her 16 years on the WTA Tour the three-time Grand Slam champion pulled out of an event because of sickness. Sharapova gets a walkover into today's title match against Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, 18.

SWIMMING

Zimbabwe's Coventry breaks oldest mark Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry broke the world's oldest short-course record at the world championships in Manchester, England. She set her third world mark in the 200 meter individual medley and won her fourth gold of these championships in 2 minutes, 6.13 seconds. The previous mark of 2:07.79 was set by Allison Wagner of the U.S. in 1993. Coventry wore an LZR Racer, the swimsuit that has helped swimmers rewrite the record books since it was introduced in February. Earlier, the LZR suit passed another test at a meeting between the manufacturer and swimming's world governing body.

OLYMPICS

Report: Drug witness will name top athletes The New York Times said on its website that Angel Guillermo Heredia, a cooperating witness in the federal investigation into performance-enhancing drugs, said he advised and supplied track coach Trevor Graham and his athletes, including Marion Jones and Maurice Greene. The Times reported Heredia said he has provided prosecutors with the names of many elite track athletes and Olympic medal winners, as well documentation.

SOCCER

U.S. beats Canada in Olympic qualifier Nicole Barnhart's diving save on Brittany Timko's penalty kick gave the United States a 6-5 shootout victory over Canada in the CONCACAF Women's Olympic qualifying final in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The United States won the shootout after the teams finished regulation play tied 0-0 and 30 extra minutes tied 1-1.

Chad Barrett's goal lifted Chicago over San Jose 1-0 and spoiled the Earthquakes' home debut in their return to MLS. The Earthquakes returned to the Bay Area as an expansion team two years after the original franchise moved to Houston. ... Elsewhere, the Crew beat Chivas USA 4-3 in Columbus, Ohio, visiting Colorado beat New England 1-0, the Wizards and Houston played a scoreless tie in Kansas City, Kan., Real Salt Lake beat visiting D.C. United 4-0, and FC Dallas shut out New York 2-0 in Frisco, Texas.

AROUND THE HORN

Football: Penn State linebacker Sean Lee tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in practice, and the school says he is likely out for the year.

Boxing: Miguel Cotto retained his WBA welterweight title by knocking down Alfonso Gomez three times before their fight was stopped in the fifth in Atlantic City, N.J., setting up a fight with new IBF champion Antonio Margarito. Earlier, Margarito knocked out Kermit Cintron in the sixth round.
