HORSE RACING

Tale of Ekati nips War Pass At least War Pass gave a performance worthy of a shot at the Kentucky Derby. War Pass tired in the stretch, and Tale of Ekati took advantage to win the $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Coming off a last-place effort three weeks ago, War Pass rushed to the lead and held it until the final 50 yards of the 1 1/8-mile race before finishing second. Tale of Ekati, ridden by Edgar Prado,won by a half-length and stamped himself a leading contender for the May 3 Derby.

• Colonel John added to his credentials as the West Coast's top 3-year-old by winning the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby. Colonel John, ridden by Corey Nakatani, was clocked in 1:48.16 for 1 1/8 miles and paid $7.20, $4 and $3.20.

• Recapturetheglory beat heavily favored Denis of Cork at the $500,000 Illinois Derby at Hawthorn Park in Cicero, Ill. Recapturetheglory paid $33.80 to win and covered the 1 1/8-mile dirt course in 1 minute, 49.01 seconds.

Serena Williams wins No. 5 Serena Williams screamed at herself, broke her racquet and then finally finished off Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 for her fifth title at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. Williams won the match on her eighth championship point with an overhead slam.

Marquette wins WNIT Former St. Paul Central star Angel Robinson had 16 points and eight rebounds as she led Marquette (21-14) to an 81-66 victory over Michigan State (23-14) in East Lansing for the WNIT title.

Wambach's 3 goals pace U.S. Abby Wambach's three goals led the U.S. to a 6-0 victory over Jamaica on Friday night in its opening Group A game in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Dave van den Bergh scored the fastest goal in Red Bulls history 46 seconds after the opening kickoff, sparking New York to a 2-0 victory over visiting Columbus. ... In other MLS games: Two goals by Jimmy Crawford led Kansas City to a 3-2 victory over Colorado. ... Luciano Emilio gave D.C. United the lead after 62 seconds, touching off a four-goal barrage in a 4-1 victory over visiting Toronto.

Olympics: Steve, Mark and Diana Lopez., coached by their older brother, Jean, became the first trio of American siblings to qualify for the same Olympics since 1904, when they qualified for the U.S. taekwondo team bound for Beijing by clinching spots at the U.S. Olympics trials in Des Moines.

Curling: Craig Brown's take-out shot on the final rock of the 10th end lifted the United States to an 8-6 victory over Norway in the opening draw of the 2008 World Men's Curling Championship in Grand Fork, N.D.
