Centennial turns back Anoka upset bid

CLASS 2A

• Section 5: Top-seeded Centennial survived a scare from No. 8 Anoka with a 1-0 quarterfinal victory. Gabbie Hughes' third-period goal broke open a scoreless tie. Goalie Anne Juergens stopped all 21 shots she faced. … Kaylee Wood scored two power-play goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to help Champlin Park edge Irondale 3-2. Kaleigh Martinson assisted on all three Rebels goals.

• Section 7: Top-seeded Elk River/Zimmerman cruised past Forest Lake 7-1 for the semifinal victory. Breanna Simon scored two goals and Mikey Simon stopped 28 shots for the Elks. … In the other semifinal, Andover downed Grand Rapids/Greenway 6-2 behind a pair of goals from junior Sidney Portner.

CLASS 1A

• Section 4: Junior forward A.J. Deering's power-play goal with a minute left in regulation lifted South St. Paul to a 3-2 quarterfinal victory over Henry Sibley. … Laken Muller's goal in overtime gave Simley a 3-2 victory over Minnehaha United. Muller scored two goals and Reegan Patnode added a goal.

BOYS' HOCKEY

• NEW PRAGUE 3, ORONO 2: Alex Gregor scored an even-strength goal with 18 seconds left in the third period to lead the Trojans to victory.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

• ST. PAUL CENTRAL 49, EAST RIDGE 48: Junior Anika Gardner made both of her free throws after being fouled with four seconds to play to lift the Minutemen to victory.

NOTES

• KOHLER REACHES MILESTONE: Alexandria girls' basketball coach Wendy Kohler became the 15th girls' basketball coach in state history to reach 500 victories, when the Cardinals (14-4) defeated Bemidji 63-35 in Alexandria on Saturday. Kohler has a 500-249 career record.
