Benick defeats Rose in match between two of the nation's best
In what was the most highly anticipated individual match of the high school wrestling season, Totino-Grace junior Lance Benick defeated Sibley East's Nathan Rose 9-3 in the 195-pound final at the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Invitational Saturday. Benick went into the match at the No. 1-ranked 195-pound high school wrestler in the nation. Rose, a senior who has signed to wrestle at the University of Minnesota, is ranked No. 3 nationally. Both are two-time defending state champions and went into the match undefeated.
GIRLs' Hockey
• BLAINE 5, CENTENNIAL 1: On the last day of the regular season, the Bengals clinched the Northwest Suburban Conference title with a commanding win over the Cougars. Amy Schlagel scored three times for the Bengals as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Schlagel finished with four points. Kiersten Falck had a goal and two assists for Blaine (No. 8, Class 2A).
• EDINA 1, HILL-MURRAY 1 (OT): Boomer Sonnek made 30 saves as the Hornets held on to tie the class 2A, No. 4 Pioneers in a nonconference showdown. Emily Eide scored in the second period to give the Hornets (class 2A, No. 7) the early lead, until Abigail Boreen tied the score in the third.
Boys' Hockey
• BLAINE 3, CENTENNIAL 2 (OT): Easton Brodzinski put away the game-winning goal at 1:53 of overtime, giving the Bengals a Northwest Suburban Conference victory. Blaine took an early 1-0 lead in the first period before giving up two consecutive goals in the second period. Luke Noterman tied the score at 2-2 with less than three minutes to play in regulation for the Bengals. Collin Hughes and Ryner Gorowsky scored for the Cougars.
