Sandhill Cranes eat many things, both plant and animal. They are omnivorous. Their diet, pulled from wet meadows and fields, includes grains, berries, insects, seeds, tubers, earthworms, mice, crayfish, frogs, lizards, and snakes. And snails, as this Crex Meadows crane is showing us.
Crex, site of crane nesting spring and summer, and migrant flocks in the fall, is located just north of Grantsburg, Wis. The photo was taken April 9.
