Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has been nominated to become vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, according to a spokesman for the DNC.

DNC members will vote on Rybak's nomination at their meeting this weekend in Chicago. Rybak would be filling a vacancy created after Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz became chair of the DNC. Wasserman Schultz nominated Rybak for the post.

Rybak was an early supporter of President Obama's during the 2008 presidential campaign.

If Rybak is chosen as vice chair, he would join four others at that rank in the Democratic Party: California Rep. Mike Honda, political strategist Donna Brazile, union leader Linda Chavez-Thompson and Raymond Buckley, president of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.
