Ron Wilson named U.S. junior team coach

The former North Star is the eighth winningest coach in NHL history.

Ron Wilson has been named coach of the U.S. junior national team for this winter's tournament in Helsinki.

Wilson coached the U.S. Olympic team to a silver medal in 2010 and is eighth in NHL history in coaching victories.

Wilson, coached 1,401 NHL games and had 648 wins in 18 seasons with Toronto (2008-2012), San Jose (2002-08), Washington (1997-2002) and Anaheim (1993-97).

A seventh-round selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1975 out of Providence, Wilson played 117 NHL games, including a stint with the North Stars.

The world junior tournament is Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Helsinki.
