A head-on crash involving three vehicles on Hwy. 5 in Waconia on Monday afternoon left one person dead and another person injured.

A pickup truck traveling east in the westbound lanes collided head-on with a westbound pickup at Hartmann Drive about 5 p.m., the State Patrol said.

The driver of the westbound pickup, Michael Jon Clarkson, 45, from Rockford, was killed.

The driver of the pickup going the wrong way, identified by the patrol as Lisa Ann Welch, 57, of Cokato, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. It was unclear if she was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

A third vehicle heading west driven by Simon Noah Brooks struck the pickup that had been going the wrong way. Neither Brooks, 28, of Minneapolis, nor a passenger in his truck, Michael Gene Swinehart, 25, of Hastings, were seriously hurt, the patrol said.

The eastbound lanes of Hwy. 5 were closed for several hours, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
