Road trip -- south Texas

Down in the Valley

Someone had to go to Texas to check on migration, so I volunteered. We began in Houston three days ago, today are some distance south, heading for South Padre Islnd. We hope that the extensive rains of the last two days have grounded some trans-gulf migrants. So far, in four days we've seen more birders than migrants. Waterfowl and shorebirds have been seen in pleasing numbers, though. There're always good birds to see down here. Six a.m., time to get back on the road. More later.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat. It’s too soon to tell how much the immigration crackdown is to blame.
