Rivers

She's been called the greatest river, flows everywhere, holds nothing, and I like the way that floats off my tongue. Nope aint the Nile, I have it on good authority, "Denial, aint just a river in Egypt. Mark twain." And can't be the Euphrates;…. rev 9, vs. 14, "Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates". The greatest of anything is a heavy moniker to wear and maybe it's just I think it's the greatest, none the less you have to wonder what those waters are like that's never felt a paddle or seen the sunshine. That's some wondering water, water a person will never get to dip a toe in. It's hard to imagine a fast flowing and free swath of current without one single fish in it, never was, never will be. Runs for any reason summer winter spring or fall, colder than any other, clear and pure, pure enough that if you could dip a cup, it would chill the roasted breath off the finest scotch. Tumbles when it needs to, pools when the place allows and tickles the roots it caresses, leaves a stretch of limestone blushing and given enough time, will wash its way through any rock surface conceivable. Water as a drop mystifies me, put a bunch together in any semblance of flow from a spring ditch to a back wood brookie creek and lord only knows I spend more than enough time in it or about its shores. You'd think I'd know more about the most precious element on earth, I don't, I won't, but I'll follow wherever it leads me as long as I can that's for darn sure. And it's a good thing to get out of the river once in a while too, because, "You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it."
