The lead rider in a caravan of five all-terrain vehicles made an abrupt stop, was struck from behind and thrown to his death on a county road in western Minnesota, authorities said Tuesday.

Lance Lyngaas, 39, of Campbell, Minn., was killed in the crash late Sunday afternoon on County Rd. 15, about 17 miles southwest of Fergus Falls, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

Lyngaas, riding a four-wheel ATV with four others single-file behind him, suffered head and neck injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.
