Former Edgerton boys' basketball coach Richie Olson died Thursday from injuries suffered when he fell last weekend. Olson, who also coached basketball and served as the athletic director in Virginia, guided the Flying Dutchmen to one of the most memorable state championships in 1960.
Tiny Edgerton, population of 900 then, beat Austin 72-61 to win the one-class state tournament at Williams Arena before a record crowd of 19,018. It upset powerhouse and No. 1-ranked Richfield 63-60 in overtime in the state semifinals.
Olson was 23 years old at the time of the improbable run, and in his first year of coaching at Edgerton. It also was the school's first appearance in the state tournament.
Funeral arrangements for Olson are pending.
Tourney at Xcel named
The North Star College Cup will be the name of the annual, all-Minnesota college hockey tournament at the Xcel Energy Center, it was announced Thursday. The inaugural event, with four of the state's five Division I teams, will be held Jan. 24-25.
"When we began discussing this tournament, one of the things we knew we needed was a tournament name that would instantly catch the attention of college hockey fans in the state," said Tom McGinnis, Minnesota associate athletic director and men's hockey administrator. "We feel that the North Star College Cup accomplishes that."
As previously announced, the Gophers will play St. Cloud State and Minnesota State will face Minnesota Duluth the first day. A consolation and a championship game will be played Saturday. Bemidji State will rotate into the field in 2015.
Lynx playoff tickets
Playoff tickets for the Lynx will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. Single-game tickets for the Western Conference semifinals start at $16. They are available by calling 612-673-8400 or by visiting lynxbasketball.com/lynxtix. The Lynx have the best record in the WNBA at 23-7 and their magic number for clinching the home-court advantage for the conference playoffs is two — any combination of Lynx wins or Los Angeles losses totaling two — with four regular-season games left.
