Rescuers saved two teenage boys who broke through thin ice on a north-central Minnesota lake while fishing, officials said.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Straight Lake in Osage, about 9 miles west of Park Rapids, according to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.
The boys, ages 13 and 14, were checked out by emergency medical personnel once out of the water and were found to be unharmed, a Sheriff’s Office statement read.
“The Sheriff’s Office is advising everyone to stay off all area lakes at this time,” said Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander.
According to the statement:
About 2:50 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office was alerted to two boys who had fallen through the ice. Emergency personnel from various agencies including the state Department of Natural Resources were sent to the scene.
The boys had been floating on an Otter sled, used to haul ice fishing equipment, before they fell into the lake.
A DNR conservation officer and a Hubbard County deputy rode in a boat to the boys, breaking ice along the way. They pulled the boys into the boat and returned to shore.
