Reports: Colorado will fire Hawkins

Multiple media outlets are reporting that embattled University of Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins will be fired Tuesday.

Hawkins has been on the hot seat since last year. The cries for his ouster grew louder following the biggest collapse in school history Saturday when the Buffaloes blew a 28-point lead at Kansas with less than 12 minutes left and lost 52-45. It was the 17th consecutive loss outside Colorado for Hawkins, who is 19-39 in five seasons in Boulder.

In other college football news: Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said running back John Clay is questionable for Saturday's game against Indiana because of a sprained right knee. ... Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, who was knocked out of Saturday's 67-65 triple-overtime victory against Illinois, leaving the game with a headache and dizziness, has passed a series of tests necessary to be cleared to play.

BASEBALL

Steinbrenner heads nominees Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will be on the Hall of Fame veterans committee ballot next month with former New York manager Billy Martin. Former union head Marvin Miller also will be on the ballot with players Vida Blue, Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Al Oliver, Ted Simmons and Rusty Staub.

Retired Toronto, Baltimore, Seattle and Philadelphia general manager Pat Gillick also is on the 12-man ballot, the Hall said Monday. To be elected, a candidate must appear on at least 75 percent of the 16 ballots. Results will be announced Dec. 6.

In other baseball news: Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are out as announcers on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" after 21 seasons. The network did not announce replacements. ... Jhonny Peralta and the Tigers agreed on an $11.25 million, two-year contract with a club option for 2013. ... Former Dodgers GM Paul De- Podesta is joining Sandy Alderson in the Mets' front office as vice president of player development and scouting. ... Former Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu will serve as bench coach on the Blue Jays next season.

AUTO RACING

Johnson to get Gordon's pit crew Four-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson had a major shakeup to his race team Monday when Hendrick Motorsports gave him teammate Jeff Gordon's pit crew for the final two races of the season. The swap comes a day after Johnson's crew was benched mid-race at Texas Motor Speedway following a shaky performance on pit road. The switch Sunday was made possible after an accident knocked Gordon out of the race.

AROUND THE HORN

Cycling: Cycling's governing body has asked Spanish authorities to open a doping case against Tour de France winner Alberto Contador. The International Cycling Union says it wants the Spanish cycling federation to hold a disciplinary hearing regarding Contador's positive test for clenbuterol during the race.

Soccer: Lauren Cheney scored in the 17th minute, Abby Wambach got goals in the 33rd and 50th, and the United States stayed alive in qualifying for next year's Women's World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica.
