Q How do we keep spiders from attaching webs to our house at the eaves? They make our home look neglected, like a spook house.
A Take a broom or similar long device to knock down the webs.
• Clean up piles of brush, leaves or wood, and other potential harborage areas. Mow long grass and weeds. These measures will discourage spiders from being active too close to your home.
• Regularly remove webs and crush any egg sacs you find on the outside of buildings. It is effective, even if it doesn't seem like it.
• Lighting can attract insects, which attract spiders. Either turn off or reduce outside lighting or, if that isn't possible, use lights that are less attractive to bugs. For example, replace mercury vapor lights with sodium vapor lights or use yellow bulbs.
These nonchemical methods are often enough to reduce spider populations. However, you may also want to use an insecticide spray. Choose a product that is labeled for exterior use. Particularly treat nooks and crannies where spiders are more likely to hide. Keep in mind that insecticides are short-lived control measures and are more effective when combined with nonchemical efforts.
