Refund for light bulbs took a year

Smoking light bulb didn't last five years, as promised.

After one compact fluorescent light bulb failed and another started smoking, a Minneapolis woman wanted her money back for the 30 bulbs she purchased two years earlier. The General Electric bulbs had a five-year guarantee.

So she wrote to the company in June 2009 asking for a $50 refund but got no response. The store where she bought the bulbs wouldn't help, either. One day after Whistleblower contacted GE, the customer received a call from a representative who told her she could return the bulbs for a full refund.

A GE spokeswoman said this customer's experience was rare. Typically, the company will send a letter and replacement coupons within a few days.

What experience have you had invoking long-term money-back guarantees?
