May 23, 2010 at 7:25PM

Summery warmth invaded the Midwest in earnest on Sunday, and the prospect ofrecord-setting highs, including the first 90s of 2010 for some cities, willextend through the first part of the week. The exceptional warmth will flow in a continuous stream from the Gulf Coastthrough the nation's midsector, ultimately reaching the interior Northeast andeastern Canada. High temperatures will be 10 F to 20 F above normal.

Highs of at least 90 F will be set from Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., to St.

Louis, while 90 degrees will be possible either Monday or Tuesday in suchMidwestern cities as Indianapolis, Chicago and Minneapolis.

In the Northeast, the most noteworthy temperatures will be reached fromnorthern New York state to inland Maine, where hot spots will see 90 F orhigher.

Along the immediate East Coast, onshore winds, clouds and, in some areas, showers, will trim daytime warmth during the early week.

There will not be any meaningful downturn in temperature over most of themidsection through at least Thursday, so record highs may continue to topple inthe face of the early surge of summer.
