The crime: Ming Sen Shiue was convicted of kidnapping Mary Stauffer and her 8-year-old daughter in 1980 and holding them for seven weeks, during which he repeatedly raped his former teacher. He also was convicted of killing a 6-year-old boy who witnessed the abduction.

The trial: During his murder trial, Shiue attacked Stauffer with a knife when she took the witness stand. Her wounds required 62 stitches.

The sentence: Shiue was sentenced to life in prison and is about to be released on parole. During his 30 years in federal custody, Shiue tried to escape and was placed in isolation from other prisoners.

What's next? Anoka County District Judge Jenny Walker Jasper will decide if Shiue is still dangerous and should be sent to a secure treatment facility, possibly for the rest of his life.
