Yesterday marked Pearl Harbor Day, "which will live in infamy," according to President Franklin Roosevelt. Americans entered into a period of shared sacrifice in which resources were rationed, most families directly felt the void of a missing loved one, and the wealthy paid their fair share through a marginal tax rate that was almost 60 percent higher than it is right now. Today our nation finds itself fighting a virtually unilateral, underfunded, two-front overseas war. Instead of shared sacrifice, few of us directly experience the anguish of a missing loved one serving multiple tours of duty. We gripe about airport inconveniences and how much it costs to fill our gas-guzzling cars. Instead of the wealthy paying their fair share, Republicans refused to compromise with President Obama over the expiring Bush-era tax cuts. It is truly a shame that the venerable "Greatest Generation" has to witness today's "Whiniest Generation" promote narrow-minded selfishness and greedERIC JAYNE, APPLE VALLEY
